Mafi weet met dit boek weer een prachtig en krachtig verhaal neer te zetten in een wereld vol onmogelijkheden, vol vreemde mensen en vol van moeilijkheden.

Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat het vorige boek van Tahereh Mafi hier gerecenseerd werd door mij, maar het verhaal staat me nog goed bij. Een prachtig vertelsel door Tahereh Mafi waarin ze de lezer meetrekt in het verhaal. Met haar nieuwe boek Whichwood weet Mafi dit weer te doen. Ze neemt je mee in een unieke wereld die niemand zo goed kan neerzetten als haar.

Vogelvrij door Minca

Tijdens het verhaal had ik geen tijd om te bedenken wat er had kunnen gebeuren, het verhaal eiste al mijn aandacht op en zorgde ervoor dat ik nergens anders aan kon denken.

Vogelvrij door Sebastien de Castell

Eindelijk, eindelijk had ik 'Vogelvrij' in mijn handen. Ruim een jaar voordat het boek verscheen zag ik een prachtige aankondiging op de retail beurs in Houten. Speelkaarten die aan het plafond hingen en een metersbreed doek met een prachtige illustratie van Kellen trok direct mijn aandacht. Na enkele seconden van pure verbazing stapte ik erop af, en dat was pas het begin van het avontuur.

En dan, wanneer je denkt dat de rust zal wederkeren in het boek en de grootste spanning is geweest, komt ze met een nieuwe plottwist.

13 Minuten door Sarah Pinborough

Voor fans van 13 Reasons Why, Pretty Little Liars en Gossip Girl. 

13 minuten lang was Natasha dood, maar ze kan zich er niets van herinneren. Wat is er die avond gebeurt dat ze in het koude water terecht was gekomen? En waarom doen Hayley en Jenny, haar twee beste vriendinnen, zo geheimzinnig? Het enige dat ze wist was dat het geen ongeluk was, en ze wilde ook geen einde aan haar leven maken.

Namens uitgeverij Meis & Maas mocht ik deelnemen aan de blogtour voor het boek ‘S.T.A.G.S.’ van M.A. Bennett. Het verhaal gaat over Greer, een nieuwe leerling op S.T.A.G.S., die een speciale uitnodiging krijgt om te gaan jagen schieten vissen. De uitnodiging komt van de Middeleeuwers, een groep jongeren waar de hele school tegen op kijkt, gedragingen en gewoontes van overneemt en waar iedereen van hoopt er ooit een te worden. Greer beseft dat dit haar kans is om geen buitenbeentje meer te zijn en besluit te gaan. Maar als ze zich voor drie dagen op het landgoed van Henry de Warlencourt, komt ze erachter dat jagen schieten vissen wel heel letterlijk wordt genomen. En levensgevaarlijk kan zijn.

Een goede aanwinst in de YA boeken, zeker voor mannelijke lezers.

De Nieuweling door Taran Matharu

De Nieuweling is het eerste Nederlandstalige boek in de Summoner reeks van Taran Matharu. Het boek verteld het verhaal van smids leerling Fletcher die erachter komt dat hij voorbestemd is voor iets groters. Nadat hij een demon heeft opgeroepen en op de vuist is gegaan met de zoon van de bevelhebber, slaat hij op de vlucht in de hoop niet vervolgd en misschien wel vermoord te worden. Maar als hij op een school voor begaafden terecht komt waar iedereen een demon blijkt te bezitten, komt hij erachter dat hij niet is wie hij dacht dat hij was.

Alle Sterren is het zesde en laatste deel in de Lunar Chronicles (op de graphic novel van Iko na). En dit ruim driehonderd bladzijden tellende boek is zo anders dan de andere boeken, maar een verrijking wat de serie betreft. Het bevat namelijk allemaal korte verhalen van de (hoofd)personages uit de andere vijf boeken.

Zoals jullie weten ben ik helemaal gek op contemporary reads. In dit genre kan het artsy boek Piper Perish natuurlijk niet missen. Toen ik het boek voor het eerst zag sprak de cover alleen al me aan. Ik heb de Engelse hardcover, echt zo mooi! De simpele witte cover met de prachtige felle letters, dit boek schreeuwde naar mij.

I just finished reading The Girl with All the Gifts, by M. R. Carey! This was not exactly YA - more of a general sci-fi book about a not-so-distant future in which zombies have taken over. Totally not my type of book, usually, but I heard so much about this one that I just had to pick it up.

De Tijdreizen van John Blake speelt zich in vele tijden over de hele wereld af. Aangezien John Blake verdoemd is op een spookschip de Mary Alice dat geheel haar eigen plannen lijkt te trekken. Maar John weet waarom, en hij is vastberaden het verloren onderdeel van zijn vaders experiment terug te krijgen om de tijdreizen te kunnen reguleren.

Zo ging dat bij Leora's ouders, voorouders en een heleboel generaties daarvoor. Wanneer je overlijdt wordt er een boek gemaakt van je huid en deze wordt 'gewogen'. Oftewel er wordt gekeken of jouw boek waardig genoeg is om te mogen blijven bestaan of dat het wordt verbrand en je tot 'vergetenen' wordt gemerkt.

The Glittering Court is na Vampurys Academicus en De Alchemisten series van Richelle Mead het volgende boek dat in het Nederlands is vertaald. Dit keer wat minder bovennatuurlijke elementen maar evengoed een wereld die wij ons minder goed kunnen voorstellen. Er lijkt een grote stap terug in de tijd gemaakt te zijn met goudwinning, brieven, paard en wagens, en vooral heel veel jurken met franjes.

Winter, het vierde deel van de Lunar Chornicles van Marissa Meyer is onvoorstelbaar goed. Ik was al enthousiast over de eerste drie delen op de kleine voorspelbaarheden na, maar dit boek, dit in principe, afsluitende deel is gewoon onverklaarbaar verslavend. Ik dacht dat ik er wel een week of 2 voor nodig zou hebben om door de ruim 800 pagina's te komen. Maar niets was minder waar. Na 4 dagen legde ik het boek opzij en het leek alsof mijn leven net zo compleet als incompleet was.

Summer is finally here (at least that is what they say, even though it doesn’t look like it at all in Maastricht..)! That means I am finally done with all a person have to be done with and have more time to read! So excited! I already have reviews lined up, waiting to be posted and read by you so stay tuned – we will be active during the summer and you can pick up your next reads based on our suggestions!

I am presenting to you today “Strange the Dreamer” by Laini Taylor. A little background story as to how I chose this book. A few years ago a friend suggested to me the “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” series (by the same author). I read the Goodreads promo – battles, teeth, Prague, angels, blue hair..weird, huh? That sparked my interest and I decided to check them out. And oh boy, did I find one of my three favorite authors EVER!!! (I won’t fangirl here about those series, if anyone wants to hear my thoughts do feel free to contact me <3). Anyways, when I saw a year ago that Laini has announced a new book (FINALLY) I already knew I wanted to read it, no matter what. And I was happy enough to get that book for a review. 

In my classical style I will start with my rating – it is full, fat 5 crosses! Well deserved! With a smiley face on them! And a silent scream at the end for the sequel (oh yes, there will be a sequel to this book). Along with “A Court of Thorns and Roses” this is the best book I have read this year (so far).

I just finished reading the entire Mortal Instruments series, by Cassandra Clare

So this review will be a whole lot more straight-forward than my single-book series, as I'm reviewing it as a whole. This series is an amazing roller-coaster of emotions and plot, with tiny details that fit together like puzzle pieces to create an amazing story. It has its ups and downs, like any long series, however is wrapped up amazingly in the end!

De engelstalige covers van de drie boeken zien er geweldig uit en ik ben daarom ook blij dat er besloten is om die cover voor de Nederlandse editie ongeveer zo te houden.

Today I am finally going to review the third and final installment of the ‘To all the boys I’ve loved before’ series by Jenny Han. So let’s jump right into my review for ‘Always and forever, Lara Jean’.

In this last book we follow Lara Jean, her awesome family and amazing boyfriend Peter during her last year of high school and we follow her as she does all the senior high school stuff like prom, graduating and choosing where to attend college. And just like in all the other Jenny Han books, there is also some family drama involved.

It is finally June, a bit after all my defenses and Thesis writing and Poster presentation and I am now officially a Master in Biomedical Sciences (thank you, thank you!!). That means a lot of things, but what I am most happy about is that I FINALLY have more time to catch up on reading. My Goodreads yearly challenge is in serious pain here. And my TBR pile will soon reach my height (and here I must insert that I am 1.70m so not short at all..). I still managed to steal some hour here and there to read one of my most anticipated books of 2017 and I give you my review of “A Court of Wings and Ruin” by Sarah J. Maas.

So so so, I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this book. This was one of the most highly anticipated books of 2017. When an excerpt was published, people freaked out, both positively and negatively. This book has the biggest amount of hype surrounding it.

Velen van jullie kennen vast wel het boek Furthermore, in het Nederlands vertaald als Verdermeer. Dit is weer een van die prachtige boeken waar je gewoon al verliefd wordt op de kaft zonder dat je het boek hebt gelezen. Maar deze kaft verraad zoveel meer! Furthermore is eigenlijk een kinderboek, maar als je van sprookjesachtige verhalen vol raadsels en mysteries wilt lezen, en van de hele wereld van Alice in Wonderland houdt, dan is dit ook een geschikt boek voor jou!

Na het fangirlmoment van Cinder, Scarlet en Cress was ik natuurlijk razend benieuwd naar het tussenboek over Levana. Ik wilde graag weten hoe haar personage in een persoonlijk boek over haar werd uitgewerkt en helaas viel dat een beetje tegen.

A Court of Wings and Ruin - volgens Rika een prachtige afsluiter van een fantastische serie!

A Court of Wings and Ruins, het derde deel alweer uit de Court of Thorns and Roses serie! We hebben er allemaal lang op moeten wachten maar een maand geleden verscheen dan eindelijk de Engelse editie en afgelopen week verscheen de Nederlandse editie! Benieuwd wat wij van de Dome vonden van dit boek? Geen zorgen, want Irina, Caroline, Minca en ik (Rika) vertellen jullie allemaal een voor een wat wij van het boek vonden!

May has come to an end, bringing a lot of long awaited sequels to our lives. It is safe to say that we had some great books to read. And to me the most notable release of May is “A Court of Wings and Ruin”- the epic sequel to the 2nd series written by the queen of fantasy herself – Sarah J. Maas! 

And I must warn you here that this review will be highly subjective (well aren’t all my reviews, hehe), praising, fangirlish, and everything positive there is to say.. because that is what you get with me when it comes to Maas.

If any of you are into romantic, contemporary YA books, you probably know that Jenny Han just published a new book called ‘Always and forever, Lara Jean’. This book wraps up het amazing ‘To all the boys I’ve loved before’ trilogy and I’m very very excited to read it. But before I review that epic book for you I want to start by giving you a small look at the first two books so everyone who hasn’t yet read them (yet) can get an idea of what they’re about (and also because the books are very good so they need to be highlighted on the blog hehe).

I just finished re-reading The Infernal Devices trilogy, by Cassandra Clare! This is a part of my Shadowhunters Marathon, and I loved every moment of it!

The Infernal Devices is an extension to the world of the Shadowhunters that Cassandra Clare presents in her Mortal Instruments series. Shadowhunters are half human, half angel people who protect humanity by hunting demons. They are fighters with a complex political system, and with a sort of ancient flair of grace and respect. In The Infernal Devices, we follow a group of Shadowhunters in Victorian London. If the time period isn’t great enough, imagine adding some steampunk to the mix. Magic, fighting, steampunk and fancy dresses? Sign me up!

Ik ga er niet te veel over weggeven, maar Suzanne Young weet hoe ze met je gedachten moet spelen (ironisch gezien het boek ook over gedachtegangen en herinneringen gaat).

Ben je al bekend met Het Programma & De Behandeling over Sloane en James die op zoek zijn naar zichzelf, hun verleden en hun herinneringen? Ik was razend enthousiast over deze twee boeken en vond het daarom ook jammer dat er geen vervolg meer op kwam. Toen bleek dat Suzanne Young wel nog boeken in deze reeks uitbracht was ik ervan overtuigd om deze te gaan lezen ook al moest het dan in het Engels.

It is a fine Sunday evening here and I am sleepy because I almost did an all-nighter reading a book (#acotar, sorry-not-sorry, he he ).

Today I am writing about another event and an absolute “MUST” suggestion for you, especially if you are a Potterhead like me (Before you ask, I am Gryffindor). If somehow it hasn’t reached your ears – “Harry Potter™: The Exposition” is currently in the Netherlands (Utrecht). And if by some chance you still haven’t went there or have been wondering if it is worth your time (and money) – this event recap is all for you.

YALFest!!!

So of course, we as the Dome also went to YALFest. But not only that, we had a whole YALFest weekend! On Friday, we had the honor to interview Veronica Rossi, on Saturday we went to the ‘boekhandelarenborrel’, as they say, which was having drinks with the awesome authors as representatives from the Dominicanen boekhandel, and on Sunday we went to YALFest! It was a whole lot to handle, but we had the best weekend ever! Let me tell you a bit more about the events.

Cinder, Scarlet en Cress, de nieuwe favorieten van Minca!

Hee iedereen! 

Vandaag niet 1, niet 2 maar 3 boeken door mij gerecenseerd. Ik heb het dan natuurlijk over de Lunar Chronicles! Om heel eerlijk te zijn was ik nooit eerder gezwicht voor deze boeken, aangezien Cinder en Scarlet al ooit in 2012 en 2013 verschenen. Helaas werden de andere delen nooit vertaald, maar toen ik hoorde dat Blossom Books de hele reeks ging uitgeven en dat nog wel in één jaar tijd, kon ik mijn boekhormonen niet meer in bedwang houden.

A Court of Series, een must read volgens Rika!

A Court of... van Sarah J Maas, ik denk dat na gisteren er niemand meer is die niet van deze serie heeft gehoord. Hoewel velen het nieuwe boek van haar al in huis hebben, zijn er vast nog mensen die nog twijfelen of de serie wel iets voor hun is. Ter voorbereiding op A Court of Wings and Ruin heb ik de eerste twee boeken uit de serie gelezen, A Court of Thorns and Roses en A Court of Mist and Fury. Voor degene die ze liever in het Nederlands lezen en nog twijfelen, dit wordt spoilervrij dus lees vooral mee en als je overtuigd bent kun je nog snel deel 1 en deel 2 lezen voordat de Nederlandse deel 3 uit komt op 30 Mei.

And hello May! How I have waited for your warmth.. And for us YA bookjunkies it is also a special month, celebrating the release dates of long awaited sequels like “A Court of Wings and Ruin”, “Lord of Shadows” and “Always and Forever, Lara Jean”. We are all so excited that we decided to dedicate May to “Recaps”. (Hint: you can expect recaps of series from authors like Sarah J. Maas, Cassandra Clare, Jenny Han, Marissa Meyer and ofc, Marie Lu.)

And here follows my review for the 3rd and final book in “The Young Elites” series – “The Midnight Star”.

The story follows yet again a few months after the ending of “The Rose Society”, our Adelina has alienated everyone and is in the darkest possible place ever. Even more angry and lonely, she has set on a quest to conquer and destroy everything staying in her way:

Hebben jullie afgelopen weekend ook allemaal Donna Freitas leren kennen tijdens het YALFest? Ik keek hier ontzettend naar uit omdat ik Unplugged had gelezen ter voorbereiding op het YALFest, en ik wil jullie graag vertellen wat ik van haar boek vond.

Unplugged gaat over een meisje, Sky, die in de App-wereld leeft. Op jonge leeftijd is ze ingeplugd op de virtuele wereld in de hoop op een beter leven. Helaas hunkert Sky naar het moment dat ze mag uitpluggen en de echte wereld in mag. Helaas wordt dit moment haar afgenomen en kan ze niet meer ontsnappen aan de virtuele werkelijkheid. Maar wat als ze illegaal uitplugt? Wat voor wereld zal ze tegemoet gaan?

Another day, another review. Today I’m reviewing ‘The Upside of Unrequited’ by Becky Albertalli. Maybe you know her from the popular book 'Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda’? In 'The Upside of Unrequited' we follow Molly Peskin-Suso, a girl that has had a lot of crushes but never kissed or had any contact with boys in that way. Her sister is the complete opposite of Molly and really wants to help her. Fortunately her girlfriend’s best friend is a funny, handsome and overal perfect first boyfriend (and they call him Hipster Will). But there’s a tiny problem. Molly met a very funny and awkward nerd named Reid at her work. She doesn’t think she would fall for him, or maybe she will?

Een nieuwe dag, een nieuwe review. Vandaag review ik voor jullie het book ‘The Upside of Unrequited’ van Becky Albertalli. Misschien kennen jullie haar al van het populaire boek 'Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda’?
