Q&A session - "Carve the Mark"

Hi lovely readers! Today, as a closing post after all our reviews about Carve the Mark, we want to share some thoughts of us with you. Be careful, there might be some spoilers in the text so only read it when you don't mind or you have read the book. It would be nice to also get some feedback on the questions from you, maybe you agree or disagree with us, do let us know. We're definitely interested in your view of the book! Enjoy!

How do you imagine the current?

R: As something invisible all around you. You don’t see it, but you feel it and know it is there. The Current is what keeps them going.

I: I am a science nerd so I always picture the light spectrum (I do a lot of microscopy in the past few months, it has rubbed in I think..). But something gently colorful, one that you may not be able to see with the simple eye, but is there in a shape and vision that is known.

C: I’ve always had a thing for science and astronomy. For some reason, I can’t help but imagine the Current as a kind of aurora - for me, it looks like the northern lights that wraps through space. I think it is both physical and spiritual, and a part of the Current is in each person’s blood, giving them the Currentgifts.

A: I love the idea of the Current! It’s just something that has always been there and bonds all the people of all the planets together. It’s also very powerful and people can feel the current, I would really like to know what that feels like and how I would experience it personally. I loved the part of the book where the Shotet ship went through the Current and Cyra felt all kinds of amazing. I keep wondering what it would feel like.

Do you think there are any racism issues in the book?

R: I had definitely no racism problems with this book. I never even thought of that before I saw the discussions about it. For me it feels normal how she explains the different worlds and cultures. In a dystopian book you always have one group who think they are superior to the others and claim the world to be theirs, but that’s just the world Roth created for this story.

I: To be honest I can’t find it and can’t relate to all the speculations about it. This is the way the world works in general. Without it being racism, sexism, etc. There are different casts between white straight males as well, just in their lifestyle, vision, lust for power and so on. I don’t think that Roth has exploited any “minority” in this book. But the subject is and has been gentle and a fine line in the past few years so I think that people look for things where (maybe) they wouldn’t find them.

C: As soon as I started the book, I checked out some reviews out of curiosity. The first thing I noticed was the sheer amount of reviews that were changed because of a few complaints that the book has racist connotations. These mostly point out the ‘colored aggressor’ aspect of the book. Honestly, I think that these complaints, although understandable, are somewhat exaggerated. Veronica Roth had to come up with a new world and new societies and peoples, and I believe that she did a good job making new cultures.

A: I did notice it like most people did. The Shotet are dark-skinned and wild and dangerous while the Thuvesians are white and calm and peaceful. I don’t really like this idea because it feeds the idea of darker people being wild and dangerous which is an idea that is ridiculous and really wrong and shouldn't exist in 2017. We’re all born on this planet and therefor equal and I really don’t think stereotypes like these should be used. Racism is still a huge problem and using stereotypes like this will not help us get rid of it or at least minimise it. I think Veronica could and should have considered this when writing the story because it could have been so easily changed.

What do you think about the world building?

R: On some points it lacks a deeper knowledge. It feels incomplete, although you can definitely fill in parts for yourself and finish the world yourself. It was definitely a great concept, the different worlds in the universe that try to live peacefully together although their cultures are so different.

I: I definitely loved it. Roth chose the “bigger picture” approach, one which I always found appealing. I mean where you get the boundaries of an idea and a few small details for shape and fill the empty space with imagination. I always had a lot of that. I enjoyed the idea a lot.

C: The world building was the one point of the book that made my grade go down from a 4/5 to a 3/5. I feel like some aspects of the book were very well thought-out, while others were skimmed over. Overall, I feel like the world building was out of balance. The Galaxy that Roth writes about is so interesting to imagine, however we have absolutely nothing to compare it to, making it difficult to imagine. I think that maybe some kind of introduction chapter set would have been super cool, sort of like the beginning of Avatar: the Last Airbender! “Long ago, the planets of the Galaxy lived in harmony…" Or maybe some kind of novella? That would be so nice!

A: It depends on the story but I like it when stories are just vague enough so that you can image certain things on your own. In the beginning, yes, it was a bit complicated with all the new terms and names but after 20 or so pages I really started getting into it and learning a lot while also forming my own ideas. I love that Veronica doesn’t elaborate too much on the world because experiencing it while exploring the world with Akos and Cyra was so much more exiting!

If you would choose a currentgift what would you choose?

R: I like the one from Cisi, that she can calm people with her gift. The serenity that she has is a precious gift for also the people around her. If I could choose of anything, it would be awesome to hear what people think as if they tell it to me.

I: If I have to pick an available one (mentioned in the book) I would probably be like Akos, inhibiting the gifts of others to allow me even terms and better chances of getting to know a real person (both the perks and minuses).

C: Oh good question! Is it cheesy to go with flying? Or being able to breathe underwater? Both of those would be more than amazing!

A: I would choose Akos’ gift. The idea that he can stop any current gift means he can help people who are struggling with theirs, like Cyra. Also not being able to use the current in your advantage like a lot of others can means you really need to learn to fend on your own and not be dependent on your gift to achieve certain things.

What do you think about Akos and Cyra and how they changed throughout the book?

R: I really liked how they influenced each other. Akos started as a sweet and innocent boy and Cyra as a cruel girl full of pain. Akos learned to fight, but also to stay true to your family, the same as Cyra has always done with Ryzek even when she hates him. Cyra has learned to accept her gift and stand up for what she believes, for the fact that she never wanted to torture those people.

I: I think Roth has grown as well with the development (and acceptance) of the Divergent series. Because now she has created an honest, stable, beautiful love story. And the most important – realistic. Because they both develop because of the other. And this is how (I think) it goes in real life is well. Cyra becomes softer because of Akos, while he gathers strength because of her. They show that at the end, love is worth it (and it is)!

C: I think Akos and Cyra had a really nice balance throughout the book! They helped build each other and take each other through many difficult times. I think Cyra had a beautiful evolution through the book - Akos brings out a new calmness in Cyra. I do think that Akos’s character evolution was a bit more intense and not so much my speed: he goes from super sweet (Which is something I have a soft spot for - one of my favorite characters in YA is Jem from the Mortal Instruments, so you can see what I mean by ‘sweetness’!) to more confident and more broody.

A: Both Akos and Cyra are very much their own person and stay that through the book, but they also learn a lot of new things from each other. They both kind of influence each other while still staying true to theirselves which makes them very strong characters and I love that. Be yourself but learn and better yourself!

Who would you rather challenge in the arena, Cyra or Akos?

R: Although when I would be able to read minds and know what both of them would do in a fight, I think I would still choose Akos, since I have no intention of being so close to any of them and come in contact with their gift.

I: At the end Akos is the better call. Even if he can inhibit all your Currentgift. Skill at battle and tactic can make you victorious. Pure pain would weaken even the sharpest mind and toughest skin. If you have the gift of Akos/Vas then maybe it is a close call. She is still skilled though so Akos it is.

C: I need to say Akos for this one - just the idea of being inflicted pain to the point where you could die from it is terrifying. Even though Akos could turn of my flying current gift, I could probably beat him in an archery contest of some sort! ^-^

A: Akos for sure. A fight against Cyra would almost certainly not be won. She’s very skilled and her gift is also a very painful way to die so no thank you! 

Tris or Cyra, Akos or Four? Why?

R: Definitely Cyra and Akos. It’s not just any simple romance, I feel like they are more real in the story and how they influence each other really touched me.

I: Cyra 100%. Fierce, loyal, strong, intelligent, realistic, full of love and hope. I hope more books will be motivated to create characters like her and inspire young girls to follow their dreams, even when things get tough. Tris was good at the beginning, but her indecisiveness can literally kill everything in a person like me. I like when people are on point. Akos and Four are a tough call. I think at the end Four is more my type, more closed and independent at first glance. Both are loyal and loving and I enjoyed reading about them.

C: Cyra! She has so much going on with her family and in her mind with her Currentgift, it gives her a real edge to her personality that Tris and Four don’t really have. Veronica Roth really managed to improve her characterization in Carve the Mark!

A: I’m going to choose Cyra because she is the stronger person of the two girls, although I do relate to Tris aswel. I just think I could learn a lot more from Cyra. I also love her personality and the fact that she’s interested in so many things reminds me of myself. 

I would also choose Akos because he’s not afraid to be honest. After reading ‘Four’ I realised just how tough Four is and that he wants to protect Tris no matter what (sometimes also by lying to her) and that isn’t something for me. Akos however…

Are you Shotet or Thuvhe?

R: Thuvhe! I’m more of a softer person, not as harsh as Shotet.

I: Debatable. I can be both gentler like Thuvhe, but if put in a situation I am a firm and fierce Shotet for sure!

C: I would probably be more Thuvhe, I’m quite introverted and quiet. However, I’m not someone who will let anyone push me around.

A: I think I would rather be from Thuvhe. I like how they are all very gentle and themselves. If I were a Shotet and not very rich or from the royal family I would probably be sick without medicine. Also the fact that Ryzek rules Shotet is a big NOPE.

Bonus question:

Which divergent faction are you?

R: I can’t think of one faction that I would always stay true to, so definitely Divergent.

I: Divergent!! I even did the test, too diverse as character to fit at one place :D

C: I know they’re the bad guys, but I’m an Erudite… I’m a huge nerd, can never get enough of classes and learning (if I’m into the subject), and I’m all in for research! But do you guys think they’ll let me read fiction, then? I do kind of like the Abnegation ideas though, and Dauntless looks more fun.

A: I would 100% be Divergent. Only being good at one thing is not really my style. I’m more of a Jack of all trades and I enjoy learning and doing anything and everything!

Hoe stel je je de Stroom voor?

R: Als iets onzichtbaars om je heen. Je ziet het niet, maar je voelt het wel en je weet dat het er is. De Stroom is wat ervoor zorgt dat je door blijft gaan.

I: Ik ben een wetenschapsnerd dus ik stel me altijd het lichtspectrum voor (ik werk veel met microscopie in de afgelopen paar maanden, het is een beetje blijven hangen denk ik..). Maar iets zachts en kleurvols, een die je niet kunt zien met het oog, maar er wel is.

C: Ik heb altijd al iets gehad met wetenschap en astronomie. Om de een of andere reden stel ik me de Stroom voor als een soort van aura – voor mij ziet het eruit als het noorderlicht dat door het helal verweven is. Ik denk dat het zowel iets fysieks als spiritueels is, en dat een deel van de Stroom in ieders bloed zit, wat hen de Stroomgaven geeft.

A: Ik vind het idee achter de Stroom geweldig! Het is gewoon iets dat altijd heeft bestaan en alle mensen op alle planeten met elkaar verbindt. Het is ook heel krachtig en mensen kunnen de Stroom voelen, ik zou graag willen weten hoe dat zou voelen en hoe ik het persoonlijk zou ervaren. Ik vond het deel van het boek waarin het schip van de Shotet door de Stroom gaat en Cyra vanalles voelt geweldig en ik blijf me maar afvragen hoe zoiets nou zou voelen.

Denk je dat racisme een probleem vormt in het boek?

R: Ik heb zeker geen problemen met racisme gehad in dit boek. Ik heb hier zelfs nog nooit over na gedacht totdat ik de discussies erover zag. Voor mij voelt het normaal hoe ze de verschillende werelden en culturen uitlegt. In een dystopisch boek zit er altijd wel een groep die denkt dat ze beter zijn dan de anderen en de wereld voor hun claimen, maar dat is gewoon de wereld die Roth heeft gecreëerd voor dit verhaal.

I: Om eerlijk te zijn kan ik dit niet vinden en ik kan me ook niet in vinden in alle speculaties hierover. Zo werkt de wereld over het algemeen. Zonder dat het racistisch, seksistisch of iets anders is. Er zijn ook gewoon verschillende groepen binnen blanke mannen, in hun levensstijl, visie, verlangen naar macht. Ik denk niet dat Roth een minderheid heeft uitgebuit in haar boek. Maar in de afgelopen jaren is dit onderwerp heel gevoelig geworden en zijn er ook veel mensen die ernaar zoeken waar dit (misschien) niet te vinden is.

C: Zodra ik in het boek begon heb ik enkele reviews opgezocht uit nieuwsgierigheid. Het eerste dat mij opviel was de hoeveelheid reviews die waren veranderd doordat er werd geklaagd over de racistische klanken in het boek. Hierbij hebben ze het voornamelijk over het verschil in huidskleur. Om eerlijk te zijn vind ik deze klachten, hoewel begrijpelijk, toch lichtelijk overdreven. Veronica Roth moest een volledig nieuwe wereld creëren met nieuwe culturen en mensen, en ik geloof dat ze dit op een goede manier heeft gedaan.

A: Net als de meeste mensen heb ik het wel gemerkt. De Shotet hebben een donkerdere huidskleur en zijn wild en gevaarlijk terwijl de Thuvhesiers een lichtere huid hebben en kalm en vredig zijn. Dit idee vind ik niet zo leuk omdat het het idee voedt dat donkerdere mensen wild en gevaarlijk zijn, terwijl dat een heel belachelijke en heel verkeerde gedachte is en al helemaal in 2017. We zijn allemaal op deze planeet geboren en dus allemaal gelijk en ik denk daarom ook niet dat dit soort stereotypes moeten worden gebruikt. Racisme is nog steeds een heel groot probleem en dit soort stereotypes helpen ons niet om van dit probleem af te komen of het te verminderen. Ik denk dat Veronica dit zou en moest overwegen bij het schrijven van dit verhaal aangezien het een detail was wat makkelijk te veranderen was.  

Wat vindt je van de opbouw van de wereld?

R: Op sommige plekken mist er wel een diepere betekenis van de wereld. Het voelt soms niet compleet, hoewel ik wel vind dat je dit zeker voor jezelf kunt invullen en zelf een beeld kunt maken van de wereld. Het is wel zeker een geweldig concept, de verschillende werelden in het universum die proberen om vreedzaam met elkaar samen te leven ook al zijn hun culturen zo verschillend.

I: Ik was er zeker weg van. Roth heeft gekozen voor een algemener overzicht van de wereld, wat mij zeker aansprak. Bijvoorbeeld wanneer je de grenzen van het idee in het verhaal krijgt en enkele details, en dat je de rest kunt invullen op je eigen manier. Ik vind deze manier van de opbouw van de wereld zeker heel prettig.

C: De opbouw van de wereld was voor mij zeker een punt waarbij ik het boek niet met een 4/5 maar met een 3/5 heb beoordeeld. Ik had het gevoel dat sommige delen van het boek zeer goed uitgedacht waren en ook goed uitgewerkt, terwijl andere delen werden overgeslagen. Over het algemeen vond ik dat de opbouw erg uit balans was. Het universum waar Roth over schrijft is zo interessant om voor te stellen, maar je hebt absoluut niets om het mee te vergelijken waardoor het moeilijk is om dit voor te stellen. Ik denk dat een introducerend hoofdstuk wel heel leuk zou zijn, zoals bijvoorbeeld het begin van Avatar: the Last Airbender! “Lang geleden leefden de planeten in vrede…” Of misschien iets van een novelle? Dat zou zo leuk zijn!

A: Natuurlijk hangt dit af van het verhaal maar ik hou er wel van als verhalen net vaag genoeg zijn om bepaalde dingen zelf te bedenken. In het begin vond ik het verhaal inderdaad heel ingewikkeld met alle nieuwe termen en namen maar na 20 pagina’s begon ik echt in het verhaal te komen en leerde ik veel nieuwe dingen terwijl ik tegelijkertijd mijn eigen ideeën vormde. Ik hou ervan dat Veronica niet te uitgebreid uitlegt hoe de wereld in elkaar zit maar we de wereld juist ontdekken met Akos en Cyra, dit vond ik veel leuker!

Als je een Stroomgave kon kiezen, welke zou dat dan zijn?

R: Ik vind de Stroomgave van Cisi wel leuk, dat ze andere mensen kan kalmeren met haar gave. De sereniteit die ze uitstraalt is een kostbare gave voor ook de mensen om haar heen. Als ik kon kiezen uit alles, dan zou ik het wel zeer leuk vinden om te kunnen horen wat mensen denken alsof ze het tegen me zeggen.

I: Als ik kon kiezen uit een die in het boek wordt genoemd dan zou ik waarschijnlijk die van Akos kiezen, andermans gaven uitzetten zodat ik de mensen erachter echt kan leren kennen (zowel de voordelen als de nadelen).

C: Goede vraag! Is het suf om te kiezen voor vliegen? Of onder water kunnen ademen? Beide van deze gaven zou geweldig zijn!

A: Ik zou de gave van Akos kiezen. Het idee dat hij elke andere stroomgave kan stoppen betekent ook dat hij andere mensen kan helpen die moeite hebben met hun gave, zoals bijvoorbeeld Cyra. Ook is het feit dat je de stroom niet in je voordeel kan gebruiken zoals andere mensen goed omdat je je dan onafhankelijk van je gave leert verdedigen en kan je dingen ook bereiken zonder je gave.

Wat vindt je van Cyra en Akos en hoe ze door het boek heen veranderd zijn?

R: Ik vond het heel leuk hoe ze elkaar beïnvloedden. Akos begon als een lieve en onschuldige jongen en Cyra begon als een wreed persoon die altijd pijn lijdt. Akos heeft geleerd om te vechten, maar ook om altijd trouw te blijven aan jouw familie, hetzelfde als wat Cyra heeft gedaan met Ryzek ook al haat ze hem. Cyra heeft geleerd om haar gave te accepteren en op te staan voor wat ze geloofd, voor het feit dat ze nooit mensen wilde martelen.

I: Ik denk dat Roth is gegroeid, ook met de ontwikkeling (en acceptatie) van de Divergent serie. Nu heeft ze namelijk een eerlijk, stabiel, en mooi liefdesverhaal geschreven. En nog het meest belangrijk – realistisch. Ze veranderen beide door de ander. Dit is ook hoe (ik denk) dat dit in werkelijk ook gebeurt. Cyra wordt zachter door Akos, terwijl hij meer kracht krijgt door haar. Ze laten zien dat op het einde liefde het waard is (en dat is ook zo)!

C: Ik denk dat Akos en Cyra elkaar in balans hielden door het boek heen. Ze hielpen elkaar om zich te ontwikkelen en hielpen elkaar door de moeilijke tijden. Ik denk dat Cyra op een mooie manier door het boek heen is veranderd – Akos zorgt ervoor dat Cyra rust kan vinden. Ik vond wel dat Akos veel intenser veranderde, maar erg snel: hij gaat van super lief (daar heb ik een zwak voor – een van mijn favoriete karakters in YA is Jem van The Mortal Instruments, dus je snapt wel wat ik bedoel met ‘lief’!) naar meer zelfverzekerd.

A: Zowel Akos en Cyra zijn beide heel erg hun eigen persoon en ze blijven dit ook door het boek heen, hoewel ze wel veel nieuwe dingen leren van elkaar. Ze hebben beide een soort invloed op elkaar maar ze blijven wel altijd zichzelf wat ze heel sterke personages maakt en dat vind ik heel goed. Wees jezelf maar leer en maak jezelf beter!

Wie zou je liever uitdagen in de arena, Cyra of Akos?

R: Hoewel het mij niet uitmaakt met wie ik vecht wanneer ik gedachten kan lezen en zou weten hoe beide zouden denken in de arena, zou ik toch voor Akos kiezen, aangezien ik geen van beide zo dichtbij wil laten komen om in aanraking te komen met hun gaven.

I: Uiteindelijk is Akos een betere keuze. Zelfs ook al kan hij alle Stroomgaven uitschakelen. Vaardigheden in vechten en tactiek kunnen jou tot overwinnaar maken. Pure pijn zal wie dan ook verzwakken. Wanneer je net zo’n gaven hebt als Akos/Vas zou het misschien niet zoveel uitmaken. Ze is nog steeds vaardig in vechten, dus het wordt Akos.

C: Hier kies ik dan toch voor Akos – alleen al het idee om de pijn van haar gave te voelen waaraan je kan doodgaan is angstaanjagend. Ookal zou Akos mijn vlieggaven kunnen uitschakelen, ik zou hem vast kunnen verslaan in een boogschietwedstrijd of iets dergelijks! ^-^

A: Sowieso Akos. Een gevecht tegen Cyra zou bijna niet gewonnen kunnen worden. Ze is heel behendig in vechtsport en haar gave zou ook een heel pijnlijke dood zijn dus nee bedankt! 

Tris of Cyra, Akos of Four? Waarom?

R: Zeker weten Cyra en Akos. Bij hun draait het niet gewoon om de romance. Ik heb het gevoel dat hun veel realistischer zijn in het verhaal en hoeveel invloed ze op elkaar hebben heeft me echt geraakt.

I: Cyra, 100% zeker. Fel, loyaal, sterk, intelligent, realistisch, vol met liefde en hoop. Ik hoop dat meer schrijvers gemotiveerd zullen zijn om boeken te schrijven met zo’n soort karakters waarbij ze jonge meiden kunnen motiveren om hun dromen te volgen, ook al wordt het soms zwaar. Tris was goed in het begin, maar haar besluiteloosheid kan je helemaal kapot maken. Ik hou ervan wanneer mensen weten wat ze willen. Akos en Four is echter een lastige keuze. Ik denk dat uiteindelijk Four meer mijn type is, meer gesloten en onafhankelijk in het begin. Beide zijn loyaal en liefdevol en ik heb genoten om van beide te lezen.

C: Cyra! Er is zo veel aan de hand met haar familie en in haar gedachte met haar Stroomgave, het geeft haar net iets meer persoonlijkheid, wat Tris en Four niet hebben. Veronica Roth is er werkelijk in geslaagd om haar hoofdpersonen meer realistisch te maken in Carve the Mark!

A: Ik kies Cyra omdat ze de sterkere is van de twee meisjes, hoewel ik me ook kan associëren met Tris. Ik denk dat ik gewoon veel meer zou leren van Cyra. Ook vind ik haar persoonlijkheid helemaal te gek en ze is geïnteresseerd in heel veel dingen en dat doet me aan mezelf denken. 

Ik zou voor Akos kiezen omdat hij niet bang is om eerlijk te zijn. Nadat ik ‘Four’ heb gelezen ben ik erachter gekomen hoe hard Four is en dat hij Tris koste wat het kost wil beschermen (soms ook door te liegen) en dat is niet voor mij. Maar Akos…

Ben je Shotet of Thuvhe?

R: Thuvhe! Ik ben meer een zachtaardig iemand, niet zo hard als de Shotet.

I: Ik twijfel nog. Ik kan zowel zachtaardig zijn zoals op Thuvhe, maar in bepaalde situaties kan ik een vastberaden en felle Shotet zijn, zeker weten!

C: Ik zou waarschijnlijk meer Thuvhe zijn, ik ben nogal introvert en stil. Hoewel ik dan weer niet iemand ben die met zich laat sollen.

A: Ik denk dat ik liever van Thuvhe zou zijn. Ze zijn heel zachtaardig en zichzelf en dat bevalt me wel. Als ik van Shotet zou komen zou ik waarschijnlijk ziek zijn zonder medicijnen omdat ik niet heel rijk of van de koninklijke familie zou zijn. Ook het feit dat Ryzek de leider is, is een grote NEE.

Bonus vraag:

Welke divergent factie ben jij?

R: Ik kan niet maar één factie bedenken waar ik altijd trouw aan zou blijven, dus ik ben zeker Divergent!

I: Divergent!! Ik heb een test gedaan, en die liet zien dat ik te divers ben om in één factie te passen :D

C: Ik weet dat ze de slechteriken zijn, maar ik ben een Erudiet… Ik ben een ontzettende nerd en kan nooit genoeg krijgen van lessen en leren (wanneer ik in het onderwerp geïnteresseerd ben), en ik ben zeker geïnteresseerd in onderzoeken! Maar denk je dat ze me daar boeken laten lezen? Ik hou wel van de ideeën van Zelfverloochening, en Onverschrokkenheid ziet er veel leuker uit.

A: Ik zou 100% Divergent zijn. Enkel goed zijn in een ding is niet echt mijn stijl. Ik hou er eerder van om van alles te leren en te doen!
