Een vloek zo eenzaam en A curse so dark and lonely van Brigid Kemmerer
Dit keer niet één, maar twee recensies in één post! Nicole en Emma lazen allebei hetzelfde boek, maar dan in een andere taal. A curse so dark and lonely van Brigid Kemmerer kwam in 2019 al uit, terwijl de Nederlandse lezers hoopten op een vertaling. Die kwam er! Vorige week was het dan eindelijk zover: Een vloek zo eenzaam, uitgegeven door Blossom Books, was een feit!

Prins Rhen is vervloekt: hij beleeft de herfst van zijn achttiende levensjaar telkens opnieuw. In het begin maakte hij zich niet veel zorgen want het leek gemakkelijk de vloek op te heffen: deze zou verbroken worden als er een meisje verliefd op hem werd. Maar dat was voordat hij merkte dat hij aan het eind van iedere herfst veranderde in een bloeddorstig monster dat alles en iedereen om zich heen verscheurde, inclusief zijn familie. Na 327 herfsten is hij alle hoop verloren. Totdat de onschuldige Harper Lacy zijn wereld in wordt gezogen.
Dé vertaling waar heel YA-land op heeft gewacht is toch wel Een vloek zo eenzaam van Brigid Kemmerer. Alleen al die prachtige kaft zorgt ervoor dat je het boek wil lezen!
Dit ‘sprookje’, is gebaseerd op Belle en het Beest en vertelt het verhaal van Harper en Prins Rhen.
Vanaf pagina 1 voelde ik een klik met Harper. Ze is direct, dapper en heerlijk nuchter. Ze is gewoon een meisje zonder opsmuk en dat voelt ook wel eens verfrissend. Het feit dat ze in ‘de echte wereld’ woont, vond ik erg goed bedacht en het verschil tussen Washington D.C. en het magische Sinteldaal, wordt op een erg interessante manier duidelijk gemaakt. Harper heeft een moeilijk leven, haar moeder is ziek en haar vader heeft haar en haar broer achtergelaten met zware problemen. Als ze ineens in de sprookjeswereld van de prins belandt, wil ze dan ook niets liever dan weer terug naar huis om voor haar zieke moeder te zorgen. Toch merk je al snel dat Harper zich prettig begint te voelen en langzaam went ze aan het leven aan het hof. Ze bouwt een bijzondere band op met Rhen en zijn lijfwacht Grey en in plaats van zielig in een hoekje te kruipen of verliefd worden op de prins, steekt ze de handen uit de mouwen om het volk van Sinteldaal te helpen.
De dynamiek tussen Harper en Rhen voelt intens en de spanning tussen hen wordt op een hele rustige en realistische manier opgebouwd. Ook prins Rhen vond ik vanaf het eerste moment intrigerend. Zijn verdriet en machteloosheid worden goed weergegeven. Het grote geheim van Rhen blijft voortdurend tussen hen in hangen en ik leefde enorm toe naar het moment dat Harper erachter zou komen en hoe ze daarop zou reageren.
De schrijfstijl van Kemmerer voelt vertrouwd. Het kost totaal geen moeite om het verhaal te volgen. Haar beeldende beschrijvingen werken perfect om een sprookjeswereld neer te zetten en ik waande mezelf tijdens het lezen in Sinteldaal. De gelijkenissen met Belle en het Beest zijn duidelijk aanwezig, maar op een briljante manier bewerkt zodat er absoluut geen sprake meer is van een zoetsappig sprookje.
Een vloek zo eenzaam was precies wat ik ervan gehoopt had en enorm uitkijkend naar het tweede deel, sloeg ik het boek na twee dagen dicht. Ik kan me geen betere hertelling van Belle en het Beest voorstellen!

Harper is a girl who suffers from Cerebral palsy and hasn’t lived an easy life. Her father is gone, her brother is constantly underestimating her because of her handicap and her mother is dying. But Harper has learned how to survive. But then she tries to save a stranger and is pulled into a magical world. Harper doesn’t know where she is and struggles to understand what’s happening around her. A prince? A beast? A curse? Trapped in a magic land she spends time with prince Rhen and discovers what’s at stake if the curse can’t be broken. When Rhen realizes that Harper can be charmed like the other girls, his hope comes flooding back. But Emberfall is facing powerful forces and it will take more than the curse to be broken to save Harper, Rhen and the people of Emberfall.
A curse so dark and lonely is hands down one of the best fairy tale retellings I have ever read. The story had me hooked right from the start. Harper is from a modern day DC. Even though she has cerebral palsy she is a total bad-ass and wants to help those she can. That is what also results in her getting transported into another world. Rhen doesn’t want her to go back to her world because she is his last chance to break the curse. Harper doesn’t trust Rhen and Brigid Kemmerer did a wonderful job in writing how Harper learns to trust them and wants to help and try to save Emberfall. The book is not only from Harper’s point of view but we were also able to see inside of the beast's mind.
“There is blood under my fingernails. I wonder how many of my people I've killed this time.”
Brigid Kemmerer knows how to blur the lines between urban fantasy and high fantasy. She turned Harper into a character that’s easy to fall in love with. She has a mild case of cerebral palsy and has a lot going on at home and being abducted to a magical world and given the duty to break the curse wasn’t something she had planned. She struggles internally; she wants to return home to be with her dying mom, but she also wants to help save the people of Emberfall. Her personality is so loveable that she is one of my favourite protagonists.
“They believe her limp is the result of a war injury, but Harper is quick to correct them. ‘I was born this way,’ she’ll snap, ‘and I’m going to die this way, so teach me to work around it.”
Rhen was also a wonderful prince and you definitely will be swooned at some points! The way his character is written makes you feel sorry for him. He’s been, with the exception of Grey, alone for a long time, stuck in time. He lost his family and the trust of his people. Although he is the prince of the story, I really fell for Grey who is the commander of the royal guard and stayed by Rhen’s side facing the beast each season. Showing loyalty to his prince, but also his friend. The bond between Grey, Rhen and Harper is a love triangle, but it is written so differently that I actually didn’t hate it like I did in the infernal devices by Cassandra Clare.
Lilith is the real villain in the story and although we get glimpses of the inside of the beast, we don’t get a background story from lillith and this keeps her in comparison to the other characters very flat. I hope we learn more about her in the next books.
A curse so dark and lonely is the best retelling of beauty and the beast I have read and I can’t give it anything less than 5 crosses!
